Volvo 740 1990 b230f starting problem

Unhappy Volvo 740 1990 b230f starting problem

I have been happy volvo owner until sometime ago it became harder and harder to start my car in the morning. Even it is warm outside I had to start for few seconds to get car running and in the first few minutes idle is pretty bad. It got worst and worst and now my volvo wont start at all without starting spray.

Intersting things is that after I get it started and engine gets warmer cars idle is alot better and it starts normally. But after some time staying car wont start again.

My car has regina system and I have already tested or replaced:
-Fuel filter
-Cold start injector
-Intake air temperature sensor
-Cleaned throttle body
-Cleaned idle air control valve and tested resistance
-Fuel pressure regulator
-New plugs and wires
-Cleaned and checked distributors cap
-Measured valve clearances
-OBD shows 1-1-1 (no codes)
-Crankshaft sensor

I think there are pretty much all that I have done. Idle air control valve still worries me a little despite it had right resistance and vibrates when ignition is on because when I took hoses off it and turned on ignition I didnt feel any air streaming or anything.

moving this to the 740 board to get you more reads. Sounds like low fuel pressure or a lean mixture at start up...

Most of the things you have replaced have nothing to do with starting the car.

Replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor, the one under number 3 intake manifold runner. This should solve your problem.

Thank you. Havent measured fuel pressure yet.

I replaced coolant temp sensor. Didnt help. I measured voltage from wire that goes to the sensor. It gave only 5 volts instead of 12 which seemed quite strange. Should it give only 5 volts or I have some troubles with the wiring?

According the the 700/900 FAQ the voltage across the two leads should vary based on temp:


At 68F (20C) the voltage should be 2.0 +/-.5v volts.
At 104F(40C) the voltage should be 1.2 +/- .3volts
At 176F (80C) the voltage should be .5 +/- .2volts.

There have been cases reported where the replacement sensor was faulty upon installation. It's always best to verify prior to installation.
