Ok so you problem is your fan doesnt turn on?
You said defrost, did you mean the windshield defog?

If you did mean defog, It sounds like your blower motor.. easy fix...

My problem is I am trying to get the AC/Heat to turn on. Does that mean I need to start with the fan? If so how is it an easy fix?

Im having a hard time understanding what your talking about, your being to vague.

When you turn on the A/C does any air blow out of the vents on ANY of the fan settings?

Or if it does, is your problem that your a/c does not get cold and or when you turn it to heat does it not get hot?

Cory

I have the same car, however it is a wagon and this happened to me 2 years ago. I went to a juck yard and bought one for $10. Make sure you have a manual on how to install, a bit tricky.

Most likely it is your blower motor resistor that went bad. I my case, no fan, however at freeway speeds you can feel a low heat coming out of the vents. If this is your symptons, then I would think this is the culprit.
Here is a link for the part from FCP Groton.
1996-1997 Volvo 850 Turbo Blower Motor Resistor (for models with climate control)

Good luck and let us know if this is your issue.

Anyway of telling if mine is bad or not? I would hate to spend the money just to find out it's not bad. Like if a previous owner replaced it.

Cory,
It was Dec 2008 when mine gave up the ghost. Check out this link and then follow the instructions and you will be able to determine if it is your blower or the resistor.

I just bought another resistor from my local volvo junk yard for $45. I am installing it today.

So today I decided to take out the blower motor to see if it spins. And come to find out someone cut the ground wire to it. So i rewired and WALA! It works again! But now it only works on high and and doesnt change settings or temperature. It has manual temperature control.
