Unhappy don't call me stupid..ha..ha

I have a '93 850 that has an Electronic Climate Control (or suppose to..doesn't work). The cars old and has been wrecked and fixed and pretty much served out its days or so my husband thinks; HOWEVER...I love to drive this car. That being said, my husband refuses to put any more money in this car. Now to the problem. A while back the fan on the heating/cooling quit working and a friend who is an airline mechanic by-passed the fan and put in a switch which operated the fan...not the best idea as it only turned on and off but the best he could do. Now, the fan still works with the on and off switch but as of a couple of months ago I no longer can get any of the climate control switches to work, therefore I have no air or heat just blowing air. Now.... I'm wondering how big of a problem could this be to get fixed? My airline mechanic moved to Florida.

Is there anyone out there that loves to work on Volvo's and lives near Ocean City MD?

You can try to find a used control panel for cheap.

I got one on ebay about a year ago for 50 bucks. I bet it would also fix the fan control issue if you connect the fan back up the way it used to be.

Is it likely that the fan needs replaced as well?

Sounds like you lost your climate control resistor (common problem) because your fan motor was having trouble. When the resistor died and was bypassed the fan still had the issue. It is possible that the fan has given up the ghost. These two parts are expensive and you would be better off finding them at a wrecker.

Try Erie Volvo part for used parts 888-865-8613. Putting the parts in is relatively easy.

thanks for all the advice thus far. I have a another wrecked "93 Volvo 850 that has a standard unit in it for heating/ventilation/air. I bought for parts in order to fix the wrecked front end on my other car. It is my understanding however from what I've read on this site that the parts for the electronic climate control are not interchangeable. Is that correct? Not that I would actually know where to look for the parts. By the way I have a whole car with lots of parts on it if anyone needs anything but they are still on the wrecked car. By the way, as noted the fan still comes on and blows forcefully when I turn on the by-pass switch..guess I don't quite understand the idiom "fans given up the ghost"....sorry. Thanks for all the responses.

Default another question??

is the heater fan blower motor from the '93 Volvo 850 with the Standard heating/vent/air (this is my parts car) interchangeable with the "93 Volvo 850 with the Electronic Climate Control. In the specs for the blower motor resistor it seems these are not interchangeable but I can't see anything in the specs on the blower motor. Anyone know? Thanks again.

one last question...sorry..I keep thinking of things...if I have to replace the climate control resistor and the fan blower motor do you think I would still have to replace the control panel as well as one person suggested?

They will be different between the 2 cars.
Does any of the lights on the control module work?
Does the air control setting still work?
If none of them work the module is most likely dead.
You can also check for power at the low pressure switch under the hood with the A/C switch on. If you have power then the froen level might be low. If you have no power then most likely the module is bad.
