Default Gas Tank Leaking

Actually I dont think (hope not) the actual gas tank is leaking, it just happens when I fill it all the up with gas (which is becoming more frequent with price). I think its coming from the neck filler area by the rear passenger tire. has anybody seen this before. apparently, according to the previous owner, the fuel pump was replaced with in the last few months and maybe this might be part of it. any help would be great.

Its my first volvo, '96 850 turbo and boy have i been missing out what a great all around car...so f'..ing useful and fun to drive!!!

There was a recall on this not too long ago.

Call your local Volvo dealer and ask them if this recall/campaign is still effective and if yours was already done. They should be able to tell based on your VIN, so have that ready.

I have the same issue, I fill up and it comes out. I looked at it one time and I think it is the overflow pipe, not the mail filler pipe. I think I recall someone saying it is a rubber hose that gets brittle with age and leaks. I am not 100% on this though.
I did not know that it was a recall issue...
I'll call now to see if this effects me, I have a 95 855t.

There is usually a hose that goes bad on the top of the tank.

Hey Tech, is this a recall?

Do you know what size the hose is to be replaced?

Not a recall.
It is 2 different sizes. One size on one side a different on the other.

I too, thought that there was a recall, but this one is probably not the case. The filler neck deal has not been recalled...1996 Volvo 850 Recall ID from NHTSA: 04V368000

I took my car in for an alignment at the dealer and they stole my car for the day and did the recall on the tank. I had to pay for a $14 hose maybe that's the one that is leaking on yours? Either way if the recall hasn't been done take it in, let them do it and then have them fix whatever your issue is too?

But the heatsheild recall take about 10 minutes to do. All they do is inspect the side of the tank for cracks and install rubber mounts and call it a day.

I doubt that was the hose they replaced on yours.$14.00 is not close to what the hose costs. Maybe they replaced an elbow on yours.

Oh OK man they kept it overnight, had it over 24 hours. I didn't see the paperwork my wife picked it up. We did get a free V50 loaner though, I wasn't that impressed for a new Volvo.

I had a gas leak on mine awhile back where it was the same thing that only when filled all the way full did it leak.

Dealer said it was the fuel sender pump but after tinkering around with it at a local shop we discovered that the two rubber sealson top on the tank sealing wherethe fuel pump and a relief valve attachhad been misthreaded.

I think I might have some sort of gas leak as well. When I fill my car up, my first 4 or so gallons seem to get used up pretty quick and I can smell gas around my car during thise 4 or so gallons. But after that, its all right. Im going to call the dealership about that and the recall on the heated seats as well. 1996 Volvo 850 GLT

Regarding the fuel tank recall, I found out my VIN was not part of the pool of cars authorized by Volvo for recall campaign 139 (NHTSA #04V368000). I'm filing a complaint with the NHTSA to get this problem covered by Volvo, but it will take at least 6 weeks for the process to work. For now, I plan to remove the screw from the cracked heatshield attachment point and epoxy the crack closed. That should be ok for the near term.

For those owners whose VIN was not covered by the recall on the heat shield causing a leaking fuel tank, here's a cheap fix. Remove the heat shield and repair the cracked mount on the tank with JB Weld. Next weld your heat shield to some angle iron and then weld it to the tail pipe. Check for any clearance issues with the shield by moving the tail pipe with its range of motion before attaching the heat shield. Volvo of Richardson Texas told me a tank was almost $1K when they told me my VIN was not part of the recall. I'm happy this fix was cheap and avoids any future issue with the other 2 heat shield mounting points.
