Default Problems with MAF: can't find a proper one

Hello,

I have some problems with my Volvo 850 1992 2,5L non-turbo. VIN YV1LS5502N2011010, engine B5254S
It shows "check engine" light and idling unstable. I need to add some gas to make engine work. Otherwise it stalls.
I'm sure that the problem with the MAF because if I disconnect it engine starts working more or less properly, but consumes a lot of fuel and idle is rough.
I tried to replace MAF, but the new one is not much better, so I searched on the Internet and found some recommendations on this. It has to be Bosch. Ok. I found a used one and bought it. Then I replaced my MAF with this one and... Car is not running at all. Again, if I disconnect it engine starts working immediately.
I assume, that I bought a wrong MAF even though it is Bosch.

So what I have now:
1. No MAF - running but idle is rough and gas mileage is terribly low.
2. Noname MAF - stalls with cold engine, need to push gas pedal to keep it running.
3. Bosch MAF 0280217107 - not working at all.

My question is: what is the proper MAF for my car?
I asked this question official service, but they sent me to a local service and just don't know what to do with such an old car. They answered that they can't do a proper diagnose because they don't have proper equipment (funny).
Can somebody help me with this?

We did not get the 2.5 in Volvo 850's in the USA. So I am not much help.

However, it might be worthwhile to look very carefully for a vacuum leak.

how does the car run with the no-name MAF once warmed up? I agree with FBP to look for a vacuum leak first (start with the vacuum tree under the throttle wheel cover then look for lines down to the PCV and various components). Did you inspect the idle air control valve? Can't hurt to remove the IAC and clean out as well with some MAF cleaner or carb cleaner. Not sure if you model has a MAP sensor (measures air pressure) but that can throw codes similar to the MAF.

Warmed up car with noname MAF is running nearly the same as cold. The only difference - it's not stalling sometimes. Idling still not perfect. Drifting between 0 (stalls) and 1.5 rpm.
Thanks for the recommendation, will try to find vacuum leaks.

It appeared to be not easy. So far managed to get hold on vacuum tree and cleaned/inspected all related things (flame trap, throttle...). I'm confused with the number of vacuum lines. They are going in all directions. Need to learn what should go where and then check everything step by step.
It will take some time

Solved!

Finally I found a proper MAF for my car.
It has to be 0 280 217 002

With this part it works properly.

All the previous attempts were with 0280217107 which is not ok for my car.

I hope this information will help somebody.
BTW does anybody want to by a couple of 0280217107 ?
I didn't send them back to a seller because I wasn't sure that the part was wrong. There was a possibility that something is wrong with my car.
Now it's solved and I don't need them anymore.

I'm a happy man again

Good deal, thanks for the update. Looks like you can put the part on eBay or on the classifieds forum. The 0280217107 should fit the US 850Ts and early S/V70s so its a popular part...
