Default pulling engine without transmission from the top

Hi, guys,

I just pulled an engine out of my parts car, and I found I did not really have room to get the crank sensor ring out of the transmission without taking all that plastic off the front of the engine. Naturally, the timing belt has to be off to do that, so I sure would prefer to install it with the belt on, rather than to have to install a timing belt after I put it in the car.

What are your thoughts on getting an assembled engine in? I suppose I could move the transmission over, but the transmission will have to be disconnected from all its mounts to do that, so I am going to have to support it somehow.

I have pulled the motor by itself and the motor/trans combo. Both come out no problem and you do not have to pull the harmonic balancer off. Tip the engine at an angle (front of crank being the high point) including the trans and it will slide in. I have put a jack with a block under the very front of the trans on the bell housing to make the trans match the angle.

Okay, I'll try it. Thanks for the feedback. It has two important mounts. The one under the bottom of the torque converter, in front of the car, goes to the transmission. It's apparently a sort of a torque strut. Then there is a mount in the back that sits on top of the steering rack. If I leave those connected, then the transmission is going to pretty well stay put.

Disconnect the one under the trans. The rear mount is actually connected to the trans not the engine.

Just to follow up on this, I was able to do it with the timing cover and belt pulley on. The limiting factor on the separation is getting the pilot on the torque converter out of the flex plate bolt circle. There is more room to separate if the crank pulley goes back and down, but of course it has to find space to come up eventually. I would like to open up the engine-transmission joint on the top, but it's not easy to get the transmission to tilt no matter what you do. I just let the hall effect ring scrape all the way out. I was able to do this with the passenger's side drive axle installed, but I do take its mounting block out.
