Default 2004.5 Ignition switch question

So as we speak my car is stuck in my work parking lot, im receving the "key error" message, I figure from doing some searching that its the ignition switch. I found a post where a guy said that it doesn't take any software to replace the switch and pair it with the key. is this true?

So my question is, Can I change the ignition switch my self without involving the dealer?

Thanks for any input!

Yes it's true, the key is programmed to the car, not the switch. What is the going rate for a replacement switch?
