Default Key Fob Resync

I recently bought am 07 s40. I was given two sets of keys and both will start the car. Only one will unlock the car via the remote. I tried changing the battery but it had no effect. Is there anything else I can try to get the remote portion of the key fob working. The seller said I needed to have the key reprogrammed but it seems to still be synced since it will start the car.

Something broken on the little circuit board inside the key? Amazing it starts the car but will not operate from the buttons. It is the original key?

It is the original key. It was the spare so it was never used and the battery was completely dead for who knows how long.

First, do you have the Operator's Manual for the car? If not, you can download a free PDF version after a Google search.

A) The reason it works in the ignition is that the key fob is actually TWO devices:
  • a transmitting remote (with, at this point, an "issue" in your car) and
  • an RFID chip in the shank of the "key" that interacts at VERY close range to a receiver in the key receptacle. This part of the system is functional.
B) As far as the remote is concerned, you did the correct first thing: changing the battery. I would reseat the battery and double check the "unlock" command (with no real expectation of success). You can also check the number of associated keys through the menu of the infotainment system.

My last step would be to go to the dealer with both fobs. They'll want $120 (Maryland rates) just to look at the car, and another $60 or so if they download software. If they want to sell you a new key fob, you can get a n OEM new one from MySweedishParts.com for under retail. It will still have to be programmed by the dealer.

You do have the blade key, don't you? That will get you in the door, though it WILL set off an alarm until you insert the key in the ignition.
