Red face Volvo s40 Blower problem & intermittent head light?

I have two issues with my Volvo s-40 2002.

For a while I have had one headlight not turn on. This happens intermittently. Sometimes it comes on when I start the car. Sometimes it comes on several minutes after I start the car. Sometimes the light doesn't come at all. Always once the light is on it stays on until I turn the car off.

Recently the interior blower fan is on high and stays on high no matter the setting or whether the blower switch is on auto or off or any of the numbered settings. A repair shop told me to replace the “Heater Control Head” which I did but the blower fan didn’t change at all.

The issue is with the blower not the climate control as it will heat or cool down if needed.

Any suggestions?

Fan always on high is the blower motor transistor (aka resistor before 2001). Fairly easy DIY fix. If you are hard core DIY then solder in a new transistor from Radio Shack or buy the heavy duty version from Digikey. Entire unit available from the dealer.

The headlight not working is a relay on the CEM.

I replaced mine yesterday, 50 bucks amazon prime. Don't know if it's OE, both made in Mexico. Old one was original. (You don't need to bend it to get to the top screw, there's a bolt on the side that allows the rail to move, I didn't know that and just bent it, will be covered by the glovebox anyway)

Wow! That old controller really needed to go! That's a lot of corrosion in a protected place! How are your sunroof drains? (If you have a sunroof, that is...)

Sunroof drains are good I think. Sunroof SEAL is a different story, I need to work some magic with adjustments and/or the gasket. Resistor is next to the filter and I can imagine not all air being moisture free. It was original on a 2003.

At least for my 2006, Volvo depends on a gutter with 4 - 1/2" drains rather than a tight seal. With properly working drains, there should be no dampness. I would test each corner to verify clear drains.

I don't mean to change the subject of the OP, but add this as I earlier recommended a 50 unit on amazon as a suitable replacement, it may not be.

I was still getting bad speeds sporadically from the fan later in the week and checked vida (and if I'm using it correctly indicates bad signal strength, first time getting the unit hooked up). I don't know if that means resistor or something else, going to try a swap the resistor from a buddy who's parting his 02 this week.

Hi my blower on my 2004 v40 seems to have done the same thing..It blew at full pelt for a week then stopped(I assumed it had burnt out)so I took it out and didn`t get a replacement as not sure if this is my problem maybe you guys can help..
Since taking it out I get a big draft in the passenger footwell so today I plugged it back in and went to put it in the hole(the blower wasn`t working)
it then touched bare metal and started to blow again...Do you think this is my problem as its blowing again but I can`t control it??

cheers.

It's cheaper than the alternative of dealing with the motor. I would check that first regardless. If it's never been replaced it's on it's way out eventually.

I'm confident it's not my resistor. MVS has a good post with links about manually resetting the damper motor. Hoping it isn't dead.

It looks like you lucked out, and learned something helpful... but I would be VERY careful about doing ANYTHING under the dash without disconnecting the battery first.
