Volvo S40 shut off after running then oil light on
Volvo has about 125K miles near its next oil service, checked dip stick was below average requirements. I put a took a bout a quart of 5w 30 high mileage oil I put in now that desired level. No codes after scanning diagnostic test ever. Ran great last time out a day ago and only got just down the road a but when it started to sputter losing performance power at low speed then ultimately shutting off with only the oil light on. That's when I checked oil level and hope to get a code read from testing it. Has anyone had/know this issue and/or a solution to it?! Google searches are unclear filter through this problem making almost out to be the oil pump or low oil pressure sensor... not sure how to tell.

It will run but for only for a moment.. starts up like its running fine.. then eventually sputters out shutting off every time now. I had the fuel pump replaced this last winter, but had a code from engine light showing. This time no engine light, just oil light after shuts off- not when I start it up. No code. Do you know how to find out if its the oil pump for sure? I don't know if I should try driving it a close by mechanic shop..

I would guess that you would need to hook up a compressor tester to the oil pressure port on the front of the engine to confirm lack of pressure. I would not drive it or even turn it over until you can get the pressure readings confirrmed. To locate the oil pressure port just follow the dipstick sleeve until you see it but against the engine. The oil pressure gauge is right there. Looks like a spark plug with wires sticking out the top. It screws right into engine.
not sure how handy you are but i suppose it could also be clogging in the oil pan preventing the oil from doing its thing. Easy enough to drop the oil pan and replace the o-rings and make sure the ??? screen is free of debris. Won’t cost you much. You will also need some liquid gasket sealant to reseal upon install.

I'm not sure if the engine shutting down after a few seconds is related to the oil pump or oil pressure. My guess is the light is coming on as the engine rolls to a stop reducing pump pressure. Do you see oil up top looking in the filler cap? Stalling after start suggests a fuel delivery problem - pump, filter, relay etc or a mixture problem - MAF, idle air valve, throttle body. How long does the engine run for before it dies after initial start?

Thanks for the replies.. the engine runs for about a minute to two max until it ultimately stalls out. The more I research this, more possibilities there can be, yet was hoping I get a engine light or at least a code to narrow this down better. Fuel Filter I know was replaced with fuel pump 10 months ago.. had check engine light for that issue luckily. I'm going to check on the mass air flow sensor, idle air valve, and throttle body now. Thanks for the help

Yes, check the fuel pressure. If this is a 2000-2004 S40 then replacing the fuel pump unit is fairly easy. You remove the lower back seat cushion and remove the access panel. The fuel pump unit itself is rather pricey though.
If this is a 2004.5 and up I hear you have to drop the fuel tank. Not sure as I haven't had that issue yet.
