Dash board electrical issues
I have a 2008 S60 T with 72K. Sometimes while driving, the lights in the dash, along with all the dial (speedometer, temp, and fuel gauge) go goes completely out. Also, when this happens, the windows and power locks won't work. I have to turn off the car, wait a few minutes, and then restart it for everything to return to normal.

Could be the Driver Information Module's loose microchip/capacitors
Our 2002 S60's Instrument cluster started to go on the fritz. Sometimes it would work again after pulling over and restarting the car. One day it died - 147,000 miles. Our son used a GPS for the speed and kept the gas tank topped off to make it home. After much research it was most likely a loose microchip or capacitors in the DIM (Driver Information Module). We found online detailed photo's (see this forum http://www.volvo-forums.com/t13321-d...d-problems.htm ) on how to replace both and thought about having a computer savvy friend check the soldering. The dealer quoted over $1000 for a new instrument cluster/DIM plus 3 hours of labor. Then we found on ebay BBA Remanufacturing Inc. www.BBA-Reman.com 866 573-2740 Taunton, MA. They have great reviews with a lifetime warranty and they specialize in fixing Instrument Panel's. The $339 included overnight shipping both ways. It was simple to remove the Instrument panel (someone here on the forum highly recommended disconnecting the battery first to avoid blowing fuses)....only wire plugs and a few screws. BBA fixed it the next morning and turned it around the same day. Easy to install. A Fault message on the Instrument Panel will say, "SRS/AIRBAG-SERVICE URGENT" We did not have diagnostic equipment to reset the codes. The dealer only charged $47 to reset. The refurb company gives detailed instructions on which code to reset first or they will reappear again. According to the job order from Volvo the codes reset were: First the DIM 0001,0003,0005,0006,E003 then SRS 00D4, E003. Under another thread someone used another company in CA and a local garage in VA. So happy to save over $1000. The Dealer is now recommending this company/solution as well. (We just bought the car used @ 137,000 for $3000) Hope this helps.

I have a 2004 S-60 and have been getting the SRS Airbag Urgent Service Required message. I have taken my car to the Volvo dealership on more than one occasions to fix the problem only to have it returned. 2 weeks ago I took my car in again for service and to fix the urgent message which has returned. After spending $1800 to replace the computer system, the urgent message is back again after only a week. I am not to happy because I now think I paid $1800 for something I didn't need to replace.

I sent the instrument module from my 2003 Volvo XC-90 to European Electric. It had several issues which had developed over time: the clock would randomly advance itself, the trip odometer would reset itself to zero, and finally ALL of the instruments stopped working, except for brief intermittent operation. European Electric repaired the module and returned it in a few days. Everything now works perfectly! And they even coached me by email on how to use my iCarSoft VOL II diagnostic reader to reset the SRS airbag error that was triggered by me running the car with the panel removed. European Electric provides a terrific service.
