Default Help with headlight switch!!

Hello
Ok so here is the thing, a while back I noticed that my headlights started flickering but since it didnt happen that often i didn't pay much attention to it. Recently the lights stopped working even though the speedometer cluster would light up. I noticed that if I slightly push the switch inwards the lights would turn on so i figure it has to be some sort of connection problem with the switch. Thing is that my lights wont turn on anymore so I wanted to know how to either replace the switch or check the connection. Do I have to remove the entire dash board panel or is there a simpler way to do it? What exactly should i take out? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

They headlight switches were in fact recalled. All you have to do is go to the dealer, see the service department, and they will repair it for you for free (provided the recall repair hasn't been performed yet) That means that they will remove the old switch and install the new one for you, free of charge.

However, if you STILL want to try this yourself, the switch just pulls out... often the **** will come off, then you just grab the stem with a pair of pliers (line the jaws with cardboard to keep from damaging the stem) and pull out. The switch will pop out.

It doesn't matter where you got the car. You can be the 5th owner and they will still do the RECALL if it hasn't been done and the recall is still active. They will pull the VIN and tell you. Matter of fact, you can call the dealer and they will run the VIN and let you know.

Old thread but important to bring it back....
Alright, as the tile says, any update on the Headlight Switch?

Bought the car new in 1998, HL switch went dead a year later (1999), replaced for free.
A few months later, the #2 HL switch broke again (no lights at night).
So I removed the HL Switch and used plumber glue (the glue used to connect PVC pipes) to glue the broken parts together.
This has held very well for the last 13 years, so I am proud of myself!

But...but....but it just fails again after 13 years, so here are my questions for the expert:

------------
1. The NHTSA: how long does it extend out?
Does it extend to 14 years later...LOL (this is safety issue with potential crash so who knows)?

1998 Volvo S/V70 T5 NHTSA Recall ID Number: 04V504000
Recall Date: OCT 21, 2004
Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS:SWITCH
Potential Units Affected: 97000
Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH MAY CEASE TO FUNCTION.
Consequence: THE HEAD LIGHTS MAY NOT OPERATE PROPERLY WHICH COULD RESULT IN INTERMITTENT OR NO HEADLIGHT FUNCTION. THIS COULD IMPAIR A DRIVER'S VISIBILITY, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy: ON VEHICLES WITH AN ORIGINAL OEM SWITCH, DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH. ALL OTHER VEHICLES WILL BE INSPECTED TO DETERMINE IF THE SWITCH HAS EEN DAMAGED AND REPLACE ONLY IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 24, 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT VOLVO AT 1-800-458-1552.

2. The "new" HL Switch: Volvo PN 30739333.
Has this been re-designed?
I hate to shell out $60 to see it fail again in 1 year!!!

Here is the switch I am talking about:

Call the stealer and they will tell you if the recall is still good. Other than that, you'll have to have a switch. Get one from the junk yard, but not a wrecked car. Never know what caused the accident. LOL
