RE: Gas leak in the engine bay - Delivery Pipe
Thanks forthe information on the fuel pump. I have been out of town.Right now the way the fuel leak is I can not drive the car. From what I see it is a faulty design andcould result into a fire hazard. I will be calling the dealer and letting them know about the fuel leak and try to find out if there are other reports similar to this one. It should not happen. The Volvo dealer does not have any reports of fuel leaks in the area, such as recalls.I am going to report it to the auto safety,NHTSA. Do you know of any other safety program to report a safety concern?Again thanks for your help.A repair that I am trying:I have split afuel hose and glued it on the fitting coming off the fuel pump securing it with a hose clamp. It has stopped the leak. I do not know how long this will work and will keep a close eye on it.How do you remove thefuel hose fittings connecting the fuel hoses to the fuel pump nipples?

RE: Gas leak in the engine bay - Delivery Pipe
Hello all. New here. I am considering a S80 (my first Volvo) and reading of all of these fuel leaks is disturbing. Some has said its not a common problem, so I am wondering if it varies from engine to engine. The one I am considering is a base 2.9L. The leaks that are mentioned seems to be the "T-6" models? Hastherebeen any fuel leak issues on the 2.9 as well? Thanks in advance.

Guys, update on my fuel leak...
It is fixed by the dealer for $270 since I didn't have the time to fix it myself. No more fuel leak right now. Looks fine. Thanks to all who contributed to the knowledge base. Thanks to Tech.
Btw, the problem was with the delivery pipe and it was replaced.
Cheers...

1999S89T6- Glad yougot it fixed. Thanks for your help.
Tennessee- MyVolvo is a 1999 2.9 with 91,000 miles. I am the original owner. It has a fuel leak. You can look at the thumbnail insert picture above and the leak is just above my finger on the return line into the fuel pump. It is a hair line crack.
The top of the fuel pumpis made out of plastic, not good! What has happened is: the fuel line attached to the fuelpumpwill cause the plastic to crack because of vibration or because the fuel hoseis not flexible enough. If the top of the fuel pumpwas made out of metal his would not have happened.
If my car had not been parked in a closed garage I might not have noticed the smell of gas and it could have resulted in a fire. The local Volvo dealer has stated there is not a recall but I can not believe this is an isolated problem.

Tech (Moderator),
I have experienced these symptoms of which you speak. Heavy gas smell eminating from passenger rear and slow to start after sitting. [:'(]
What might i expect in the way of repairs? Is this a fuel pump replacement, or an O-ring job or something?
Thanks for being here!!

Tech(Moderator),
Could you tell me more about the recall for the fuel pump nipple cracking? I have over 101000 miles on the car and do not have a warranty that I know of. I purchaed the car new in 1999. The nipple was cracked as shown in the picture. I would have the Vovlo dealer replace the pump if I can show them that it is under recall. I made a temporary fix and it seems to be doing good for now.

This one is for the 2002 S60 but check with the local Dealer as far as I know it is also supposed to cover the S80's S60's V70's.

What I found with the leak I had is the plastic tube coming out of the top of the fuel pump had a crack. It would require a pump replacement. A lot of work to remove the rear seat, back and side panel to the back seat to get to the pump. Under the seat are two cover plates. One on each side. Removing the cover plates exposes the fuel pump. The fuel tank is a saddle tank. One cover is for the pump and the other is so you can get the fuel lines to the other side of the tank.
This is what I did to make a temporary repair. I took a fuel hose and cut it about 1/2 inch long. Spilt it down the side so it could fit around the plastic tube coming out of the fuel pump. Put glue on the plastic tube, put the fuel line around the tube where the leak is and tightened a hose clamp on the fuel line. It has been working well since I did all of that.
If I remember right the dealer wanted just under $1000 to replace the fuel pump, which included the price of the pump. My cost is less than a dollar, not including the time it took me.
