ultamately i am looking for a used car and the s80 is somthing that i found that is very interesting. the problem is that i have no knowledge of volvos and i am unsure if buying a used 2001 s80 with around 100,000 miles is a good idea. i am interested in spending around 6k and i have found some deals around that price. is this a good idea? i am also interested in the s40. i would apreciate it if someone that is knowlagable in these cars could help me out.

the s80 will be due for a 105k service which includes a timing belt, the service costs around 6-700$ The s80 is a good car, but has some suspension issues, the springseats break, linkrods (front and rear) sometimes balljoints, otherwise great car. They can be expensive to maintain. As for the s40, it depends on the yr, i personally do not like the 40series any of them, never have, i've been working on volvo for 8yrs now, and the s60 is my favorite, asides from the 07 V8 S80

Thank you, i apreciate the information and i will trust your preference on the s60 and begin to do some research on it.
All in all i need a car that is not too expensive to mantain and not too expensive to buy, i just want a respectable car, and i would like a volvo. By the way most the models that i have found are between 2000-2002.

99/01 S80's are very poorly regarded.. Other forums talk about their problems freely. the GM designed trans is very poorly received. Dealers may know warranty problems but a majority of the cars are serviced elsewheres after 50 to 60K. The shear volume of S80's sold is just a fraction of the S60's. They only made and sold about9400 S80's per year and the S60 are sold at a clip of 65,000 per year. total volume of volvo's sold in NA is about 100,000 units down from 2003 significantly. S40 sales are less than S80's.
I wouldn't touch a 99/01 S80. Get the S60.

I bought my 02 S80 with 97,000 miles on it and its been great so far, apparently from 02 onwards is where they improved alot of the quirks and complaints about the car... Just treat it nice and itl do the same for you in return.. I didnt go for the t6 model though because i assumed that it higher mileage that would lead to extra maintainance...
If you can, get an s60 R, its the most exciting of the lot haha
