I have a '99 S80. One day while getting on to the highway my "check engine" light came on and the message said "transmission service urgent". I took the car to the dealer and was told that there was a bad solenoid in the transmission and that the entire trans. would have to be replaced. If I start-off in DRIVE the car accelerates and shifts 1 through 3 fine. The car will not shift into 4th and it will not downshift. Once I stop, I have to turn the car off and restart to get back into first gear. I currently drive the car in the 3rd gear selection and it shifts and downshifts normally (1 through 3 only). I had the bad solenoid replaced, however, it did not solve the problem. Any ideas or suggestions?

 

I would suggest to have the transmission rebuilt or replaced.Sounds like more than just a solenoid.
