Default [V40, 1998, Pb 1.8 115KM] service message - cannot delete

I have issue with my V40 - I cannot reset the service message on the gauge cluster. I have followed the instructions I have found on the internet

1. With ignition off press and hold trip reset button
2. Turn on ignition
3. Service should start blinking after about 30 seconds

In my case it does not flash, just stays on. Any input appreaciated.

what service message are you seeing? Just want to make sure you are looking to reset the service interval reminder versus a check engine light.

If its the service reminder, try this variation:

Turn the key to position 1, press and hold the trip reset. Turn the key to position 2 (all the dash lights should come on). wait for the service reminder to start blinking then release the trip reset button. turn off ignition. Test by starting up the car.

If its a check engine light, you will need a OBD2 code reader. the OBD2 port should be on the drivers side under the dash over by the transmission tunnel. look for a 2 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch connector socket.

This is not a CEL, it is a service light. I will test the procedure that you mentioned and report back

ASFAIK Pre 1998 V40 cannot use any OBD2 software - there is a special software to go with it 850 OBD II by xiaotec

All cars sold iin the US starting with the 1996 model year are required to support OBD2 - but there are a few variants to the protocol (ie ISO vs CAN versions). 96/97 Volvos used the ISO 9141 protocol and then Volvo moved to ISO 14230 - which my 2000 S40 has and I've had no issues using any of the OBD2 readers I've bought or borrowed. Newer Volvos use the CAN protocol (not sure what year... probably 2006 or so?) You may need to google around for which your model year supports and then find a tool that supports that. Some sites do refer to ISO 9141 as OBD1 but that's not quite right as the spec does support the standard code mappings. that said, manufacturers also use proprietary codes and not all code readers support all code sets (ie power train vs SRS or ABS etc) so again you need to shop around for a tool that meets your interests.

Check this out - this suggests your 98 V40 uses the ISO 9141-2 protocol...

I checked out your information but for the prefacelift Volvo V40 it is a different story. I have tested mulitple applications - none have worked at all. This is not an OD2 car. People say that I can use DDT2000 software and cabKe KL from Volkswagen. I am still investigating the matter.

I am located in Poland, car was sold originally in Netherlands
