Default Rear brake caliper removal

Hello,
I am working on the daughter's 2004 V40 and am trying to replace the rear pads. After I remove the 2 caliper bolts am I supposed to be able to slide the caliper out? I cannot. I have used a hammer but am afraid I forgot something. I have worked on several cars before and never had any issue removing calipers.
Do I need to loosen the handbrake cable or do something else?
I have watched a video of a guy who is able to easily remove the calipers right after removing the 2 bolts.
Thank you.

You have to manually retract the caliper pistons. The e brake ratchets them out. That's done by spinning the caliper pistons back in with a special tool.

sometimes the rotors wear to the point a ridge develops and the caliper wont slide off as the pads get hung up on the ridge. For the general procedure you should be able to find a Youtube vid that shows how to remove the caliper to access the pads and use the brake retraction tool. If you do in fact have a ridge on the rotor, you can grind it off since the rotor is toast and needs to be replaced.

Thank you. I am going to attempt again next weekend. I have watched several vids and removing the caliper is always super easy so mine are probably stuck.

don't be shy about using some leverage to get it unstuck. :-)
