Hello

My father has a 1999 V70 and he asked me to look under the hood and tell him what was supposed to go in the below circled location. I have since located an image online (2nd image) which reveals that something has come off - but I can't find an explanation as to what this unit is for anywhere.

At this point my father hasn't noticed anything different while running the Volvo and I will most likely be picking up a replacement at the wreckers depending on what the missing part does.
