Assistance appreciated - 2016 XC90 purchase
I purchased a 2016 XC90 T6 Momentum from Vroom and am currently in their 7 day/250 mile trial period. Had it looked at by a respected independent Volvo shop, they gave it a green light, no major issues, but said I should try to get Vroom to replace the front rotors if possible (they felt some pulsation that I can't feel but stressed there is no safety issue); it also needs an alignment. If those were the only issues, I would keep the vehicle. However, I have two issues I need help with:
The tech and I both noticed a squeak in the second row seats. He told me that there was a TJ that he would try to track down which addressed that issue; he did tell me that the service/kit worked sometimes, but in other cases the only solution was to replace the seats (which I would assume would be quite expensive). I haven't heard back from him yet, but did a search and found TJ 30599.6.0, which covers the issue. I found this in the TJ: "Note: Observe that page 7 and onwards in the method, only applies for cars with chassis number. up to 25976. On later cars, the sliding rails has been modified." My chassis number is well after 25976, so its sliding rails have been modified. I am wondering if, since the rails had been modified and only a portion of the repair is needed, if there is a higher success rate of the squeak being eliminated for those vehicles. I'm hoping someone may have some information on that. It would be especially helpful to know the cost of the TJ service, as the initial warranty has expired (I would try to get Vroom to pick this up as well, but depending on cost and success rate, it might not be a dealbreaker if I have to pick it up myself).
The second issue is the infamous piston ring/excessive oil consumption issue (TJ 31216.4.0 ), which I ran across while researching the issue above. In TJ 31216.4.0 I see this: "From engine serial number: 1501327, engines have been modified from engine factory. For service: Change to new pistons + piston rings according the attached service method." Again, it is my good fortune that my engine SN (1580240) is well beyond the SN in question. What I'm wondering is, have the modified engines as noted in the TJ (SNs>1501327) held up over time, or was this initial pass at fixing the issue less than successful?
I'd love to be able to keep the vehicle with confidence. It has the Momentum Plus, Vision, and Comfort packages, a Volvo-installed trailer hitch, upgraded 20" wheels, and low mileage, at a very reasonable price compared higher-mileage, lower-equipped 2016 T6 Momentums that I've been seeing. But even if there is data/experience that indicates that this vehicle should fare better than earlier-production 2016 vehicles (based on the more limited service needed on the seats and the engine modification on the engine), I'm still a bit nervous about owning a vehicle in a model year with so many problems and vehicle failures. My XC90 went into service 4/13/16, so there is a year left on the 100,000 mile/8 year warranty extension Volvo granted in February 2023, but I want to hold onto this vehicle for at least 5-8 years, so it's important for me to have some confidence I won't be stuck with a non-functional vehicle or a huge out-of-pocket expense a year from now (or beyond). I can stretch/save for a 2017 to completely avoid the issues covered by the TJs above (thoughts appreciated on that option) but would like to hear from some knowledgeable folks before ruling out the 2016 I have in hand.
