Default 240GL Stuck door lock

So I just bought my first 240. It's a 1990 GL, but a problem I seem to have is that the driver door won't lock/unlock with the key. I have to lock and unlock the door from the inside by stretching over from the passenger side. I have tried lubing the lock with no success. Anyone have a clue?

huh, a GL should have electric locks, so if you use the key in the either front door, or the trunk, all doors should lock/unlock. this was an option on 240's, but GL's generally had it as part of the upgraded package. the electric locks also should work from either front door inside lock ****, lift it or push it in, and the other doors should lock/unlock too..... oh wait... rusty neurons are telling me the drivers door is key/manual only, and is the only one that locks/unlocks all, hmmmmm. its the later nicer cars that had both keys working all locks.

so ignoring the electrics...

does the key turn in the drivers door lock, or does the key not turn at all? if the key isn't turning the lock cylinder, then the key and/or the lock cylinder is worn out. I believe you can still order factory-cut keys from a Volvo dealer by your VIN, along with replacement lock cylinders. copied keys are often sub-standard, and non-genuine volvo blanks are made of soft brass instead of the stainless steel of the original Volvo keys.

If the key IS turning but not unlocking, there's a ring with a tab on the back of the key cylinder that fits directly into the actual locking latch mechanism, which is the block on the back side of the door. the interior lock ****, the interior door release handle, and the outside door release handle each have pushrods connected to this same latch mechanism.

to access any of this you need to remove the door card (liner), which IIRC is a bit ugly on a 240, it requires removing the arm rest and mirror control, then unsnapping a bunch of funky clip snaps half of which will likely break (get a bag of replacements, they should be fairly cheap). a set of plastic 'trim tools' (little plastic pry-bars) will help with those clips. inside the door card is a plastic sheet taped to the door frame, this is a moisture barrier, you need to be careful removing it so you can put it back as it will keep the door cards from getting moldy after rain. also a good idea to clean out the bottom of the inside of the door, there's drain holes down there and crud accumulates, and can get kinda nasty after 30 years.

anyways, once you're in the door, the lock mechanism is still 3/4 hidden... IIRC, you remove the latch from the door side to get at the lock, but you have to disconnect the 3 pushrods first.

here's the dealer parts diagram to puzzle out...

the key interfaces directly to the back of the latch.

the driver side lock with 2 new keys is this part:

(order by VIN so the keys match your car... bring your registration and ID to the dealer parts counter to order)

Most likely the power door actuator is inop, they get unreliable with time... take the door panel off to see what's going on. May be just a matter of clean/lube need...
