'92 Volvo 240 Odometer not working!
Hello, today I replaced the odometer gear with the aftermarket gear available through IPD. My original gear did not appear broken. It felt a bit stuck but with a little push it spun. I installed the new one anyway.. After re-installing the cluster back into the car unfortunately my odometer still does not spin! Anyone else have a similar issue? I know that 240 odometers stop working often around 150,000 miles.. any info appreciated! thanks.
One of the reasons that 240’s lack value is this a well known issue. Other cars like 78-1985 RX7’s are also not as valuable in that it’s well known it takes about 45 seconds to undo the odometer cable. If you really want it fixed for good. See below

I had a similar issue where I swapped out the gear, which didn't appear to be broken as well, and it didn't fix my odometer issue. I ended up finding a used cluster on eBay, swapped out the whole thing, and it worked for a day... then that gear in it actually busted... I swapped out the gear and all has been good with the odometer for two years now.
There is a lot more to a speedo than the little gear. The capacitors go bad after some years and cause the speedo/odo to stop completely or act up in various mysterious ways. Dave Barton's 240 site has a pretty complete write up about 240 speedos.
After 390K miles he odometer stopped working so I sent out the cluster to get rebuilt. Got it back and all works well. Now have 405K on it so hopefully it will be good for another 300K. 89 740GL one owner car.
Check out these links. I found them very helpful in fixing odometer problems. I had mine fail and was able to repair it myself by replacing the IIT 2115 chip in it from a donor cluster.
