HELP! Timing belt cover broke!!
New to the group, all the help on here is great! Last night I was in the shop late, working on my 96 850 turbo wagon, removed two upper parts of timing cover to see why belt was rubbing, lower engine side of cover was right against the belt! Tried to pry it back and it broke! I am going to Junk yard tomm to get parts. My issue is I can not find any info on how to remove The Lower Inside Cover. I could not see any screws attaching it. Also I noticed my tensioner pulley is about 1/2 in above the tensioner arm floating. Belt is tight, I'm worried it might jump time. It has been stalling a lot lately, running rough until it warms up. I have replaced iac, coolant sensor, all of the vacuum lines I can find, and camshaft sensor. Sorry for the long post but I really could use some help, thanks, Kevin , new owner, 1996 volvo 850 turbo wagon platinum!

As I stated last night, bottom piece of engine side timing cover rubbing against belt and pushing it against top cover. I broke the lower part last night trying to push it off belt, I can not find directions anywhere on how to remove this part of cover, also belt is tight with no play however I noticed tensioner pulley does not touch hydraulic tensioner arm , it floats about 1/2 in above it. When previous owner had it serviced, did they use too small of a belt? Should I go ahead and replace belt, or will it be okay, thanks kw

Sorry, but you're going to have to come up with either a better description or a better picture. the belt is wrapped around the crank and cam pulleys. What I'm getting out of this is that the plastic cover on the bottom is pushing on the belt so hard that it's bending the crankshaft and cam shafts up so that the belt rubs against the upper cover.
As for the lower cover, it comes off when you pull the pulley off. Remove the 4 small bolts, not the center one.
That picture is not the idler pulley, its the tensioner and yes, it is supposed to float (not touch) like that. It is keeping the belt tight. The Idler pulley is near the front of the car as the belt goes from the top to the bottom of the engine.
The first picture of the cam sprockets looks fine too. The belt is about in the right place.
If your just talking about the dust cover that covers the entire assembly, dont panic, you can run the car just fine without it. It, by the way is held on by one bolt in the center and then lifts up to get out. (I think you know this though)
There is a metal cover that goes around the crank that is held in place by two 10mm bolts. These two covers are all that need to be removed to change a timing belt.
If you are talking about the rear plastic trim, meaning the part between the blockand the pulleys, that is held on by two 10mm bolts too. The one you cant see is down by the crank.

Sorry for the wrong names on the parts still learning. That makes me feel better knowing it's supposed to float like that. The last part you showed was the inside cover I was talking about. Mine seems to be off kilter. The top left part of it in your image where it mates with the top cover was rubbing on my belt. I figured that is what caused the belt to rub the outside like that. I was just concerned that seeing the metal threads showing on the edge of the belt was cause for alarm. Thank you for your help. This forum is a lifesaver!
Hey KW, the cover should NOT be rubbing the belt. Make sure the cover is installed properly and it should not touch the belt.
There is no wire in the timing belt.
The tensioner is NOT floating. It has a small round **** on the arm of it and the hydraulic tensioner has a pin that presses against that ****.
The back lower cover is secured by 2 bolts but it is hard to get off with the crank pulley and water pump installed.

I pushed the back cover off of it, seemed like it was not sitting properly, that is when a piece broke off. I could not tell why it was in the position it was. I guessed that maybe it had warped over time . I was going to try to take it off and reseat it, but it looked like you would have to take the balancer off to do it.
