Default Rear Main Seal Question TECH?

Ok,

Gonna do the rear main next week. Question is, which brand of seal should I buy?

I can get Elring from FCP for $12
But I can get Victor-Reinz or Corteco for $29-$30
Or Elwis for $23

I am thinking that even with the considerable difference in price the Victor-Reinz is the best way?? I have used MANY Reinz parts on my Volkswagen and they are great.

I always go OEM it would be best to buy an OEM.
Not sure who makes them though. They always come with a felt strip on them from the dealer hiding the info.

Yeah,

One place I order from says that Rienz is OEM supplier. I think I will go with them.

That would be the best.
I have never had any problems at all with them.

Not only OE part, how about seal installation?

Are you asking if there is a special tool?

My point. Seen best efforts spoiled by botched install. Which should be viewed just as important as vendor.

Yes if done right any seal can be installed without any special tools.
Half the time I don't use the tool anymore because even though it is pretty new it still doesn't work right all the time. It is a 2 piece tool but sometimes I guess it goes a little crooked and doesn't sit perfect.

What is the best way to do it without the tool? I am assuming I could tap in?

Yes you can tap it in easily. But make sure the inner lip goes over the crank shaft when installing the seal. I have seen people roll the seal installing it.

When i had to do my rear main seal on my 93 850, i used a small screw and a screwdriver. With the screwdriver drive the screw into the old seal and thentook it out with a pair of sidecutters to get into the small gap. (Should come out fairly easy) then I placed the new one in and lightly taped it in with a flat head scredriver. That's how i did mine and i haven't had any leaks.

Good luck with it
